Reduced tariff on imported rice to hurt local farmers — Bantay Bigas
FARMERS will lose some P80 billion yearly if the government reduces the tariff on imported rice. This was the contention of Cathy Estavillo, spokesperson of the group Bantay Bigas, who said a reduced tariff will flood the country with imported rice that will result in reducing the price of palay produced by farmers by as much as P7 per kilo all over the country
She said importation will never bring down the price of rice if the only solution that the government can institute is through importation. Her group, Bantay Bigas, will join in the protest rally during the SONA of President Marcos to call his attention on the true state of agriculture in the country since he promised to bring down the price to P20. Price of eggs up by P2 per piece
THE sale of eggs in the public markets of Dagupan has slackened since the price of the commodity increased by P2 per egg recently. Vendors told IFM Dagupan that it is no longer easy for retailers to get their supplies from their usual suppliers because of the marked increase in the price of eggs per piece. But the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura pointed out that it is shortage of supply that triggered the price increase. (Jordan Pulido)
