BINMALEY Vice Mayor Sammy Rosario expressed serious concerns over the ongoing sand hauling activities at the shoreline of Binmaley Beach, describing the situation as “very alarming.”

In an interview over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan on Wednesday, July 24, Rosario questioned why sand is being used to cover schools and houses, and whether Mayor Pete Merrera was given the necessary permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the sand hauling.

Rosario said it’s his duty to raise the issue to the mayor’s attention because the actions are inappropriate. Concerned citizens have also voiced their concerns about the potential consequences of removing sand from the sea, fearing it could lead to unforeseen natural disaster.

While Rosario acknowledges Mayor Merrera’s efforts to help, he said he worries about the natural consequences of removing  of sand from the base of the dike’s slope that could compromise the dike’s foundation and lead to its collapse if waves hit it.

Rosario emphasized that while there is need protect the environment and the community, he is also not against providing assistance but wants to ensure that the proper procedures are followed and that the necessary permits are obtained.

Earlier, Rosario and his team had already written to the DENR and the provincial government, requesting an investigation into what appears to be quarrying operations in the area.

He added that there is a supplemental budget for projects in Binmaley, but appropriate soil, not sand, should be used for covering purposes. (Ahikam Pasion)
