La Niña starts midyear to end dry season

SIZZLING hot weather in Pangasinan exacerbated by El Niño is not expected to end till after May, the peak period of the warm dry season, as evidenced by the 51 degree-heat index registered Monday afternoon of April 29.

According to Gener Quitlong, PAGASA weather specialist, says the province will continue to experience its hottest yet in May but will be short-lived, as thunderstorms will begin occurring as early as mid-May in the afternoons through the evening.

Pangasinan will not be spared from frequent thunderstorms as the province is surrounded by water – which is ample fuel for evaporation and condensation of cumulonimbus clouds, or rain clouds.

Quitlong said PAGASA and other meteorological models all point out to the entry of La Niña in June, a the typical trend shows that transition from El Niño to neutral conditions to La Niña takes typically four to six months.

He urged the public to prepare for the sudden shift, as the wet season may come far worse compared to previous years, as it is accompanied by La Niña at which time the Pacific Ocean begins to cool during La Niña.

The weather by then, he said, breeds many storms and rainy conditions.

During La Niña, the country will experience above normal rainfall, with rains falling at a higher volume through the ‘ber’ months.  (Ahikam Pasion)
