THE mayor of Aguilar town issued an executive order (EO) declaring temporary closure of Maples River in Barangay Pogonsili due to several drowning incidents.

Under EO No. 17 series of 2024 released on April 23, Mayor Kristal Ballesteros cited the drowning incidents have occurred in Maples River as threats to public safety.

She said that it is the local government’s responsibility to take immediate action to prevent further accidents and protect its constituents, and one measure is to close the river to all local and foreign tourists.

She added that “the temporary closure will provide the authorities with the time to develop an action plan to address the safety concerns”.

The three barangays with access points to the Maples River namely Pogonsili, Bayaoas, and Buer were ordered to monitor the strict implementation and compliance of the temporary closure of the Maples River and to form monitoring teams in all entry and exit points to ensure nobody swims in the river.

The Aguilar Police Station was also ordered to patrol the area and assist the barangays in enforcing the mayor’s order. (Eva Visperas)
