PANGASINAN and La Union are the provinces in the region with the highest cases of measles.

According to Department of Health – Center for Health Development’s medical officer, Dr. Rheuel Bobis, DOH-CHD 1 Pangasinan and La Union both have 13 cases of measles, followed by Ilocos Sur with seven and Ilocos Sur, five.

Overall, measles cases in the region have risen by 40 percent from January 1 to March 9, 2024 with 38 cases, against 27 cases in the same period last year.

Bobis said the DOH ordered regular vaccination for children, not only for measles, but also for rubella, pertussis (whooping cough), and other preventable diseases.

“Kung dati ay tuwing Miyerkules ang ginagawang pagbabakuna, ngayon ay ginawa nang araw-araw upang mas marami ang mabakunahan”, he said.

All government hospital and health centers offer free vaccination for children.

Bobis said that once fever, rashes, conjunctivitis and coughing, manifest, the child must immediately be sent to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the recorded one case of whooping cough or pertussis on March 9, the patient has recovered and was able to leavethe hospital on March 12.

It will be recalled that Quezon City reported an outbreak of pertussis,  because it is contagious, as it could be transferred via respiratory droplets, and could lead to severe pneumonia if left untreated.

It could, however, be prevented with vaccines. (Ahikam Pasion)
