THE Public Health Center (PHC) was inaugurated simultaneously with the groundbreaking of the Nuclear Medicine Facility (NMF), at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC)-Annex on February 13 which Dr. Roland Mejia, the R1MC center chief said, is another milestone.

Mejia said the twin events is a model of the Department of Health which contains both the PHU and the surveillance and research under the epidemiology unit.

On the other hand, he said the NMF is needed by the Cancer Institute’s diagnosis and treatment of people afflicted with cancer that will be supported soon by the Cancer Center.

He said because of its performance, the R1MC was adjudged by the DOH as one of the 10 best performing medical centers Luzon-wide.

Mejia thanked the De Venecia family headed by former Speaker Jose de Venecia who initiated the increase of the bed capacity of R1MC from 150 to 300, while his wife, former Rep. Gina de Venecia, worked for the increase from 300 to 600.

It was Cong. Christopher who filed the bill that increased R1MC’s beds from 600 to 1,500.

Tayo po ay nagpapasalamat sa mga de Venecia dahil sabi ko nga, hindi nag-improve ang R1MC kung wala po sila,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the establishment of NMF in R1MC was decided because R1MC is one of the cancer centers in Region 1. The Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center is six hours away.

She said the NMF will be equipped with high-end diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.

Cong. De Venecia said he is happy that a new state-of-the-art, world-class facility was groundbreaking in R1MC Annex which was preceded by groundbreaking for the Center for Disease Control

He thanked his friends and allies in government for helping him in the health initiatives being undertaken in the R1MC.  (Eva Visperas)
