CASES STILL ON THE RISE

THE Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) recorded 3,592 influenza cases (or a 66-percent increase) in 2023 compared to only 2,158 cases in 2022.

The PHO Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PESU) attributes the spike in cases from September to December last year due to the shifting from warm to colder temperatures.

The PHO said the City of Alaminos, and the towns of Anda, Bayambang, Lingayen, Bolinao, Bani, Malasiqui, and Mangaldan recorded the highest influenza cases and are being closely monitored.

Dr. Rhuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV of the Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Region I, added that the sudden spike in influenza cases may be attributed to relaxed use of face masks and lax travel policies.

Bobis warned influenza cases were still rampant on January up until the first week of February and urged individuals to get flu vaccines, avoid crowded places, and to stay in areas with proper ventilation.

He also urged individuals suffering from influenza-like symptoms, i., fever, coughs, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and body aches, to rest and isolate in order to avoid infecting family members and workmates. (Ahikam Pasion)
