MOTORISTS in Dagupan City were back to limited access to Arellano Street as a single ‘one-way’  lane starting January 6 as agreed upon by the city government with DPWH and its contractors.

Mayor Belen Fernandez who expressed hope that work on the elevation of the street will enable contractors to complete it on schedule after her ocular inspection of Arellano Street on January 3, to ensure that adequate preparations were made before the street was restored to its original ‘one-way’ status.

She directed OIC City Engineer Josephine Corpuz to clear the roadsides of ambulant vendors and parked vehicles to prevent any disruption in the remaining work to be done by contractors.

Recall that Arellano Street was temporarily opened as a two-way street on December 15  by Fernandez to give businessmen, including those at Nepo Mall, to increase their sales during the holidays.

Fernandez gave the three contractors undertaking elevation of Arellano Street to finish their respective contracts up to the end of the first quarter of 2024. Failing that, she said she will recommend imposition of fines and penalties for every day of delay.

She urged businessmen, residents and motorists to extend their maximum cooperation to the DPWH and contractors to help them finish the project before the deadline.

However, completion of work on A.B. Fernandez Avenue and Perez Boulevard, from their respective junctions, may be delayed because of the increased volume of vehicles that impacted on the contractors’ work schedule.

Elevation work on M.H. Del Pilar Street is also set to start shortly this month.

Meanwhile, DPWH is yet to announce if budgets have been allocated in the newly approved General Appropriations Act for the elevation of Burgos Street from the junction of A.B.  Fernandez Street up to the intersection of Perez Boulevard and Burgos Street Extension, and from Burgos Extension to Magsaysay Bridge along Perez Boulevard.

The additional projects are also aimed at mitigating the flooding in the central business district of Dagupan that includes the City hall and the Saint John the Evangelist Cathedral. (Leonardo Micua)
