THE Pangasinan Provincial Health Office (PHO) conceded that it failed to reach the 95% target immunization set by the Department of Health.

Dr. Cielo Almoite, Provincial Health Officer I, told the Philippine Information Agency’s Pantongtongan Tayo virtual program, that only 31,726 individuals out of 60,360 eligible population from January to September this year were administered the Periodic Intensification of Routine Immunization (PIRI), or only 52.56-percent of their target.

PIRI refers to a spectrum of time-limited activities and campaigns used to administer routine vaccinations to under-vaccinated populations and/or raise awareness of the benefits of vaccination.

The PHO said it remains focused on vaccinating at least 25,616 more children, but Almoite admitted this may be impossible to achieve by the end of the year.

Almoite said that Pangasinan’s actual population is way too big, in proportion to the targeted population set by the DOH, and therefore, difficult to achieve.

PIRI is essential for the targeted population, babies 0 to 23 months old, in order to prevent diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, influenza, measles, and other illnesses which could affect and hamper a child’s growth. (Ahikam Pasion)
