Murky water in beach alarms beachgoers
BEACHGOERS in Binmaley town were unduly alarmed when the color of the beach’s water appeared differently that others mistook it for an oil spill.
“Parang kulay-putik siya, akala naming oil spill”, said Melissa, a tourist from Benguet.
Patrick Andrada of the Binmaley Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) quickly clarified that were no ships in the area that could cause an oil spill.
To confirm it, the PUNCH sent a message to the Official Page of the Philippine Coast Guard and the later confirmed the MDRRMO’s statement.
So, why did the water suddenly appear muddy? There are many reasons offered why.
One, sediments play a role in the changing of water color. Along certain coasts, finer particles like sand and silt can add to the water’s murkiness since they’re easily agitated and stay afloat for long periods.
And tropical seawater may also become murky due to the presence of algae and plankton content.
Both above explanations are the common beliefs of fisherfolk in the area.
While there are other explanations, the local fisherfolk confirm that the seawater is safe. (Ahikam Pasion)
