DURING the recent Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) held on Monday, October 30, individuals who were previously victims of election-related incidents in Pangasinan have won in the posts they were gunning for.

Atty. Marino Salas, the provincial election supervisor, confirmed that in Barangay Bayaoas, Aguilar, Jacqueline Flor Mata, the wife of the late candidate Arnel Flor Mata, emerged victorious with a decisive vote. Her opponent, Magnolia Gelido, who sought reelection in the same village, was tagged as the alleged mastermind behind Arnel Flor Mata’s murder.

Kelly Rosario, the alleged gunman in the Flor Mata slay case, lost in his bid for barangay kagawad in Barangay Dorongan Punta, Mangatarem. Rosario had previously served as Chief Community Volunteer Officer (Chief tanod) of the barangay before deciding to run as barangay kagawad.

In Barangay Asin Este in Malasiqui town, another victim of an election-related incident, Salvador Tan Garcia, secured victory as the new Barangay Chairman. Garcia had been subjected to violence when he was ambushed by gunmen in a subdivision in Barangay Nancayasan in Urdaneta City on October 3. Although he survived, he sustained injuries and is currently in recovery.

Both Barangays Bayaoas and Asin Este have been classified as under the orange category due to these politically motivated incidents. (Ahikam Pasion)
