HB 9243 on nuclear energy regulation passed on 2nd reading
THE House of Representatives approved on second reading Wednesday, November 17, House Bill (HB) 9293 that seeks to create the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM), and establish a technological and legislative framework to guarantee nuclear energy is used safely in the country.
Second District Rep. Mark Cojuangco, sponsor of the measure and Special Committee on Nuclear Energy chairman, said once enacted into law, HB 9293 will not only help facilitate the country’s economic development, but establishes the proper utilization of nuclear energy, resulting in cost-effective, dependable, and clean electricity.
In his official Facebook page, he said “Mga kababayan, dahil sa tuloy-tuloy na pag-usad ng PhilATOM Bill, palapit na rin po tayo nang palapit sa pagkamit ng ligtas, malinis, at maaasahang kuryente para sa bawat tahanang Pilipino”.
A congressional report said HB 9293 shall ensure that the country complies with the international obligations pertaining to the utilization of nuclear energy, as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The bill proposes that PhilATOM will have a complete and exclusive authority to regulate and control the peaceful, safe, and secure utilization of nuclear energy and radiation sources. Meaning, it will assume all regulatory tasks currently held by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute .
