DOH warns vs. self-medication

THE Department of Health–Center for Health Development Region I (DOH-CHD 1) urges the public not to self-medicate, as this could result in anti-microbial resistance (AMR).

Jeanine Santiago, DOH-CHD 1 regional pharmacist, stressed that anti-microbial resistance in healthy persons is caused mostly by self-medication or taking a dose of antibiotics for every illness without consulting a doctor.

AMR is a condition where even prescribed medicines no longer work against microbes in the body because the body already developed resistance after taking in the wrong antibiotics and wrong dosage.

AMR, if not resolved early, can also result in other illnesses or will worsen the illness.

To help prevent AMR in sick persons, Santiago said the DOH-CHD 1 has started to closely monitor pharmacies, warning them not to sell antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription even as she warned patients not to increase the prescribed dosage.

Santiago further urged the public not to drink antibiotics when suffering cough and colds. (Ahikam Pasion)
