NEW MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

HEALTH experts have identified peer pressure, amplified by technology, as the primary cause of mental health issues in individuals.

During a press conference at the Department of Health Region 1-Center for Health Development (DOH1-CHD), neurologist Dr. Emerson Patawaran pointed out that social media platforms have contributed to this issue by pressuring individuals to post content that may not align with their personal standards or beliefs.

All these in pursuit of gaining approval from their online peers.

Despite these challenges, Patawaran acknowledged the positive aspects of social media, such as its ability to foster personal connections.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jilen Beltran, municipal health officer of Anda town, has observed a notable increase in mental health issues in the community.

Particularly in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the town reported eight cases of suicide while only four cases were recorded in 2023.

Dr. Beltran said a significant number of suicide cases in the town were linked to family problems and encouraged individuals to seek professional help when facing mental health challenges. (Ahikam Pasion)
