THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Dagupan inaugurated newly-built Gender and Development-related facilities last week, October 17.

Jail Superintendent Roque Sison III said the new facilities which include a conjugal room, lactation area, and child-friendly area located outside the male dormitory of BJMP are aimed at improving the lives of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) by providing them with more dedicated space and greater privacy during visits from their loved ones.

The construction of the facilities are not only aligned with various ordinances passed by the city’s legislative body but also responds to the city executive’s request to enhance the living conditions of PDLs in Dagupan’s penal and correctional facilities.

After the inauguration, Mayor Belen Fernandez and Superintendent Sison addressed the 10th graduation exercises of 80 PDLs who completed elementary and junior high school through the Alternative Learning System of the Department of Education (DepEd).

The mayor emphasized that being in jail should not hinder access to education and thanked Edwin Ferrer and DepEd Dagupan, led by Schools Superintendent Rowena Banzon and Assistant Schools Superintendent Marciano Soriano Jr., for extending the Alternative Learning System inside BJMP Dagupan.
