PANGASINENSES can expect cooler temperatures in weeks ahead as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declares the onset of a new meteorological phase. The Southwest Monsoon (habagat) is gradually weakening, making way for the Northeast Monsoon (amihan).

Gener Quitlong, weather specialist at the PAGASA Agno River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (ARBFFWC), explained that the country is currently in the transitional period between these two prevailing wind patterns.

At the moment, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), also known as the calms, has formed. The ITCZ, is the region where trade winds converge, leading to isolated rain showers across the country.

This monsoon break is expected to last for approximately three weeks. Quitlong noted, “Pinakamatagal na ang isang buwan ang pagpapalit ng hangin.

Despite the change in wind patterns and the emergence of amihan, Quitlong advised residents to be prepared for thunderstorms and isolated rain showers.  (Ahikam Pasion)
