THE 1,580 candidates running in the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in Lingayen’s 32 villages participated in a unity walk and peace covenant signing in the capital town.

This event was jointly organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Lingayen, Philippine National Police in Lingayen, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, Municipal Local Governance and Operations Office, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, and the local government led by Mayor Leopoldo Bataoil.

The event began with a Mass at the Epiphany of our Lord Co-Cathedral Parish, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Fidelis Layog. It was followed by a unity walk that included candidates, officials, and employees from different agencies, concluding at the Lingayen Civic Center for a program.

During the briefing and orientation, Comelec Officer Reina Corazon advised aspirants to adhere to lawful election propaganda to avoid disqualification and ensure an orderly election. Revenue Collection Officer Janice Beltran reminded them of their civic duty regarding taxes and document submission.

Pangasinan police director, P/Col. Jeff Fanged, emphasized the importance of unity regardless of political affiliations, a sentiment echoed by P/Lt. Col. Roderick Gonzales, the town’s police chief, who encouraged candidates to reflect on appropriate platforms for the upcoming elections. Vice Mayor Mac Dexter Malicdem urged candidates to uphold sportsmanship and respect for each other, whether they win or lose.

Before the program’s conclusion, candidates made an integrity pledge and signed it as a commitment to ensure peaceful, orderly, and honest elections.

Mayor Bataoil expressed confidence in the candidates’ ability to implement their plans and programs for their barangays, emphasizing Lingayen’s support for advocacy against vote-buying. He reiterated that town officials are non-partisan and will not endorse any candidates, leaving the decision to the voters. (Eva Visperas)
