Dagupan to receive storage facility for infectious wastes

By September 3, 2023Inside News

THE city of Dagupan will soon have a safe and secure facility for the storage of infectious wastes to prevent the spread of infectious diseases among its population and make the city’s environment safe and secure.

This as the city is set to receive a 20-footer container van with a capacity of 4.5 tons, from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environment Management Bureau 1 as part of its support to the city’s plan for the establishment of a preliminary disinfection and storage facility for COVID-19 medical and related health wastes.

Passed during the August 28 SP session, the resolution sponsored by all minority councilors, authorized Mayor Belen Fernandez to sign the memorandum of agreement and deed of donation with DENR-EMB represented by Regional Director Engr. Maria Dorica Naz-Hipe of EMB 1.

The SP measure acknowledges the impact of the global pandemic, COVID-19 continues, and as a result, waste generation from quarantine, testing, and vaccination facilities is significantly increasing which is detrimental to health and the environment.

Authors of the measure added that Hazardous Waste Management in the city is inadequate due to limited capacities and the cost required for facilities is significantly increasing volume of untreated hazardous waste, particularly healthcare wastes that are detrimental to the people’s health.

The establishment of the facility  by DENR, through the EBM, will not only improve the collection of COVID-19 wastes but will provide safe, secure containment and storage area for infectious wastes rather than mixing them with residual wastes in controlled sanitary landfill.

Dagupan has shown interest to participate in the project and committed to fulfill all the requirements under the terms and conditions stipulated in the project. (Leonardo Micua)
