Dagupan CHO warns public vs leptospirosis, ‘alipunga’
AS flooding continues in Dagupan City and neighboring towns, the City Health Office (CHO) cautioned the public against infection that result in leptospirosis and athlete’s foot, commonly called alipunga.
Dr. Ophelia Rivera, the Dagupan City Health Officer, said city government has free medicines to residents to counter leptospirosis and alipunga including medicines for colds, cough, fever, flu, or acute gastroenteritis.
Rivera said people walking and wading in floodwater risk infection and advised persons with foot or leg injury to come to the CHO to ask for prophylaxis, or preventive medicines.
Dagupan City already reported three leptospirosis cases since the onset of July 2023. Two cases, one in Barangay Tebeng, the other in Bonuan Boquig, died.
Meanwhile, the CHO recorded an increase in residents living in low-lying barangays and evacuation centers suffering from athlete’s foot.
Rivera expressed serious concern over children in low-lying areas who enjoy playing in floodwaters.
She appeals to the parents not to let their children wade and swim in floodwaters because of the serious health risks they face, i.e., diarrhea, acute gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, etc. (Ahikam Pasion)
