THIRD CITY SISTERHOOD RELATIONS

THE city of Dagupan is considering to establish a sisterhood relationship with Dongshan County in China.

The plan came closer to reality when Mayor Belen Fernandez attended the China Trade and Investments Networking at the Century Park Hotel in Manila on July 13 at the invitation of the Chinese Embassy.

In that summit, graced by his Excellency Huang Xilian, ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Philippines, Mayor Fernandez met Dongshan County Mayor He Ai where they discussed the possibility of establishing sisterhood relationship between Dagupan and Dongshan County.

With Fernandez in that summit was George Chua Cham, chairman of Government Affairs and the legislative Committee of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and  Industry in the Philippines.

She admitted in her State of the City Address last July 13 that there were already initial talks with officials of Dongshan County that turned out to be very positive.

Fernandez assured that Dagupan will gain much from its coming sisterhood relationship with Dongshan Country on trade, commerce, education tourism and cultural exchange.

At the same time, Fernandez said she successfully negotiated the resumption of relations between Dagupan and its first sister city, Iwata City in Japan, and looks forward to renewing friendship agreement in February 2025 during the 50th anniversary of the Dagupan City-Iwata City sister relations.

The Dagupan City-Iwata City relationship started in the early 70s under then Mayor Cipriano Manaois.

In her latest visit to Iwata City, she along with other Dagupan officials watched Iwata City Mayor Hiroaki Kusachi demonstrate the city’s superb capability in emergency response, which she wants to be adopted in Dagupan.

Kahanga-hanga ang kanilang paghanda at inprastruktura, mga kagamitan at pagsasanay para sa lindol at tsunami at nais nating itong maituro sa ating lungsod,” Fernandez said.

In the case of Milpitas City, the second city with whom Dagupan has a sisterhood relations, Fernandez said it will not be long before she meets Carmen Montano, the new mayor.

Meanwhile, Fernandez said her one-week trip to Thailand on the invitation of Kasetsart University in Bangkok, was made possible when 20 members of the diplomatic corps led by Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, Rev. Charles Brown, graced the Bangus Festival on April 30. (Leonardo Micua)
