INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

LOCAL athletes who participate and win in international competitions can begin to look forward to receiving cash incentives from the provincial government upon returning home.

That is if Gov. Ramon Guico III approves Vice Governor Mark Lambino’s recommendation to pass a legislation that will grant cash incentives to athletes who bring home medals won in sanctioned sports competitions overseas.

Lambino, in an interview with local newsmen, said he would propose to the governor to possibly institutionalize an incentive program not only for medalists in international sports like Ronald Oranza from Villasis town but for winners in beauty pageants, citing the case of Kerri Reilly of Mangatarem who recently won as Miss Philippines Air.

The vice governor said the governor is pushing for the development of locally-trained athletes, a program that will be taught in the planned Pangasinan Polytechnic University (PPU).

He said such a program was already started in the Pangasinan Sports Academy under the Office of the Governor but it will be made part of PPU. (Eva Visperas)
