TC ‘Amang’ rains won’t be enough to refill San Roque Dam – PAGASA

‘AMANG’, the first tropical cyclone that entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year, recently caused cloudy weather and rains in Pangasinan and in neighboring provinces.

The rains poured, unfortunately, were not enough to refill the depleting San Roque Dam in San Manuel town.

Gener Quitlong of the DOST-PAGASA Agno River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (ARBFFWC) in Rosales town said Amang is expected to weaken further, since it reached its peak only as a Tropical Depression.

“Unfortunately, the expected volume of rain to fall in Pangasinan will not be enough to restore the normal water level at the San Roque Dam,” said Quitlong. Amang’s outer clouds brought rain and cloudy weather in the province.

San Roque Dam is only one of seven dams in the country whose water supply is dwindling – facing the threat of further water level decline as El Niño approaches third quarter of the year.

The San Roque Dam has gone below 240 meters above sea level (masl). Its normal high water level is at 280 masl.

Tom Valdez, San Roque Power Corporation vice president, warned that power production will halt if dam water further goes down to critical low levels.

It can be recalled that the SRPC suspended its power generation back in 2021, when water levels dipped further to 225.47 masl on July 2021. (Ahikam Pasion)
