TEN Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and their children were initially granted scholarship through the program, “Kolehiyo sa Piitan Tungo sa Pagbabago Hawak Kamay”, launched by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Dagupan, Dagupan City government and the PHINMA University of Pangasinan.

The Memorandum of Partnership was signed on Wednesday, March 15, by J/Chief Superintendent Roque Constantino Sison III, BJMP-Dagupan Warden, Mayor Belen Fernandez and Albert Gamboa of Phina-UPang.

Constantino hailed the program that provide scholarship grants to 20 individuals or 10 PDLs and one of their children, where they can take college course of their choice for free.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said the city government will increase the number of scholarship grants to benefit more PDLs. This was welcomed by Sison.

In an interview, Sison said the scholarship will enable the qualified PDLs to become degree holders by the time they are released and will make it easier for them to be accepted by their communities.

The BJMP Dagupan, the second BJMP in the entire country to implement this program, will provide the area for the lectures and classes that will be conducted by UPang instructors.

Meanwhile, Mayor Fernandez distributed gifts to children of PDLs on the same day while BJMP Dagupan, and partner station Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan, headed by station manager Violy Valdez-Ferrer, also conducted a feeding program and distributed new slippers and other gifts to children of PDLs.

A playground was constructed by PDLs inside the BJMP premises to provide quality time with their children. (Ahikam Pasion)
