Narciso Ramos Bridge finally illuminated
LONGEST BRIDGE IN REGION I
LONG, dark roads and bridges are frequently the prime setting for horror stories, with motorists being the usual victims of unusual and otherworldly encounters…
But no longer in Pangasinan as the Narciso Ramos Bridge, the longest bridge in Region I, is now well-lit, thanks to renewable energy – use of solar lamps.
Ramos Bridge connects the towns of Asingan and Santa Maria, both in the 6th District of Pangasinan.
For the past two decades, the lamp posts on the bridge have stopped functioning with only oncoming glare of headlights of approaching vehicles illuminating the way to the bridge.
Asingan Mayor Carlos Lopez Jr. said since the lights installed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) were destroyed by vandals, locals risked crossing the bridge because several accidents were already recorded in the area due to its dark surroundings.
Last December 2022, Lopez initiated the repair of the lamp posts by installing solar-powered lights of which the town’s local government allotted P200,000 fund, and supplemented by the DPWH upon the request of 6th District Representative Marlyn Primicias-Agabas.
Formerly called Asingan–Sta. Maria Bridge, it was built on October 1996, during then President Fidel V. Ramos’s administration. The concrete bridge has a total length of 1,448 meters.
The bridge was renamed into Narciso Ramos Bridge in 2001, after the former President’s father who was a native of Asingan town.
Narciso Ramos was a journalist, lawyer, and a public servant. (Ahikam Pasion)
