THE Bikers’ Camp in Barangay Malico in San Nicolas town remains open to visitors even after fire broke out at the forest area near the Bikers’ Camp in Barangay Malico last Saturday morning, February 4.

The forest fire was declared fire out on early Sunday morning, February 5 but to the consternation of the San Nicolas’ Bureau of Fire Protection, another blaze hit Camp 4.

Fire Officer 3 Jerome Bolando, Fire Arson Investigator of BFP San Nicolas said the second fire was either caused by flying burning debris from the Bikers’ Camp or hot weather.

Fortunately, the second fire was declared fire out at around 12 noon of same day.

Razed initially was part of Mt. Malico, a favorite destination site in easternmost part of San Nicolas near the Nueva Vizcaya boundary, that enjoys a climate similar to Baguio’s.

A composite team from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the PNP was formed by San Nicolas Mayor Alicia Primicias-Enriquez to establish a weather alert procedure in a bid to protect San Nicolas’ forest reserves.

Meanwhile, the local BFP is looking into reports that the recent forest fire in Malico was caused by lighted cigarette butts indiscriminately thrown by a tourist who visited the place.

Primicias-Enriquez ordered the BFP to investigate the cause of the incident and directed barangay officials to monitor visitors camping in the area and stop them from making bonfires and to warn them about careless disposing of cigarette butts.

Malico has been the subject of territorial dispute between the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya, with both provincial governments claiming part of Malico be under their jurisdiction. (Ahikam Pasion/ Rona Rocca, 104.7 IFM Dagupan)
