PSA eyes to release 50-M national IDs by December
THE Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is continuously processing registration of citizens for their own Philsys ID.
Edgar Norberte, Provincial Officer of PSA – Pangasinan, said 2.3 million individuals are already registered in their Philsys database, but less than 500,000 individuals received their National IDs (NIDs).
Norberte attributed the sluggish issuance of NIDs to the printing system, citing numerous security and validation reasons.
“Katuwang po natin ang Central Bank sa pagpi-print ng mga NIDs, pero sa dami po ng screening dito, hindi po agad nailalabas”, he said.
But he said the PSA is set to release 50 million NIDs before December 2022 ends. As of this writing, the PSA only issued a temporary ID.
Encouraging more Filipinos to register for the Philippine National ID System, the PSA is making rounds in schools and universities.
Children who have been registered will need to have their data updated once they reach 15 years of age, because fingerprints may still change during puberty.
Meanwhile, Norberte warned establishments who reject the NIDs presented by a card holder as proof of identity. “They can be fined P500,000 if reported by a registered citizen,” he said.
While the NID has no signature feature, it has the fingerprint and eye scan details encoded in the ID, which makes the card resistant to forgery.
Norberte urged the public to report any establishment that rejects the NID as proof of identity to their office, located in Calasiao town. (Ahikam Pasion)
