Endless flooding in Dagupan cemeteries worry Dagupeños
WITH only two more weeks before the Undas, some tombs at the Roman Catholic Cemetery remain underwater due to floodwaters.
The situation continues to worry both Rudy Soriano and, his father Romulo, caretakers at the Dagupan City Roman Catholic Cemetery aware that many tombs areas are constantly submerged in floodwater because most of the flood exit channels have since been covered.
They pointed to the cemetery’s area behind the Chapel of the Resurrection where the floodwaters are trapped.
They noted that floodwaters started to recede slowly when the Chinese cemetery behind it was constructed and the extension of the memorial park in the area caused the backfilling of fishponds and compromised waterways.
The Sorianos said there are more than 1,000 tombs located at the flood-prone areas in the cemetery.
Melissa, one of early cemetery-goers who braved the floods in order to prepare their departed family members’ tombs for the Undas on November at the back part of the cemetery this Tuesday, October 11, was disappointed that she was not able to clean her father’s tomb as floodwaters were at knee-level.
She doubts if her other relatives would even consider visiting the cemetery. (Ahikam Pasion)
