Dagupan’s Brgy Tapuac Kap bewails worsening waste pollution
THE Dagupan City government is set to buy two brand new dump trucks and one backhoe for improve the waste disposal and management in the city to address the reported worsening pollution from uncollected wastes.
The plan was shared by Councilor Lino Fernandez after the city’s Barangay Tapuac chairman Nelson Cuison sought the sanggunian panlungsod’s help on October 4 to resolve the worsening pollution in the barangay owing to poor and inconsistent collection of domestic wastes of the city government from its material recovery facility.
According to Cuison, the large daily volume of domestic wastes from households and business establishments uncollected have spawned not only stench in neighborhoods and seven schools in the barangay.
The situation has worsened since the Dawel Bridge was limited access to it via only one lane for to light vehicles and limited load for trucks, preventing the city’s garbage trucks from collecting the regular volume of wastes from the material recovery facility.
Cuison said since Tapuac is located near the city center, the initial face-to- face classes have created a health problem for the pupils and students in seven schools surrounded by more than 30 eateries and carinderias.
He added that the barangay has no other place far from the residential houses and businesses where its MRF can be relocated from the Amado-Tapuac Road where downtown loop jeepneys pass through.
Councilor Fernandez, head of the Liga ng mga Barangay, admitted that compared to the other barangays of Dagupan, Tapuac is the most problematic since its MRF is located in the middle of a community and at the back of a university and its garbage often spill to the Amado-Tapuac Road.
Fernandez proposed the contracting of garbage haulers which was adopted by the previous administration. Councilor Alfie Fernandez added that the hauled wastes be brought to the Metro Clark Sanitary landfill.
However, when the P90,000 daily rate for hauling was raised, Councilor Lino Fernandez said it was not possible for the city government to shoulder the costs and instead shared the plan of the city government to purchase the dump trucks and backhoe.
He said that with the two brand new dump truck, the city of Dagupan will only pay for the wage of the driver and spend for the cost of diesel fuel.
Amid the report of Cuison that garbage is not being collected for days, Councilor Alvin Coquia set a committee hearing this week inviting officials of the WMD and the General Services Office to further discuss solutions. (Leonardo Micua)
