FIVE towns and two cities in Pangasinan evacuated 52 families to evacuation centers last week after their areas were flooded due to rains and subsequent floodwaters spawned by Typhoon Florita.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported five families in Dagupan City composed of 18 individuals were brought to the People’s Astrodome in Dagupan City while 47 families or 150 individuals in Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, Agno, Lingayen and Alaminos City were evacuated to their respective centers.

The five families in Dagupan were residents of Barangay Poblacion Oeste. Meanwhile, the residents of flooded Sitio Fisheries in Barangay Malued still opted to remain in their respective houses.

The flood in Dagupan was compounded by high tide whose height reached 1.9 meters on August 24, and almost the same height the day before, inundating low-lying streets particularly the junction of A.B. Fernandez Avenue, Arellano and M.H. Del Pilar streets up to Mayombo, as well as the intersection of Perez Boulevard, Burgos Street and part of the Dagupan-Lingayen Road.

Mayor Belen Fernandez suspended classes in all levels due to torrential rains and high tide but Governor Ramon Guico III only authorized localized suspension of classes.

The PDRRMO disclosed that aside from a damaged flood control dike in Sual no other damages were noted in other parts of Pangasinan.

The PDRRMO reported that on the day Typhoon Florita exited from the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the level of water of the Marusay River in Calasiao reached critical levels. (Leonardo Micua)
