CALASIAO town’s first woman mayor, Mamilyn Caramat, took her oath office on Tuesday June 28 at the Calasiao Sports Complex.

Caramat and her teammate for the vice mayoralty post, Kevin Macanlalay, and the newly elected town councilors took their oaths of office on the same day.

Others who took their oaths were: Myc Sison, Elias  Villanueva, Gerald  Aficial, Haverdani Mesina, Ardieson Soriano, Felipe De Vera, Manny Datuin, and Nestor Gabrillo.

In the recent local elections, Caramat won by 29,735 votes over incumbent Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon.

P/Brigadier General Romeo Caramat Jr., husband of the newly elected mayor, led the civic parade that followed the inauguration ceremony.

“I am reaching out to everyone and making this urgent appeal. Let us start the healing of emotional wounds caused by the elections,” she said in her inaugural address after the oath-taking.

Caramat vowed to support all sectors who need help to recover from the impact of the pandemic. She said quality education and free medical care for children are among her priorities in the next three years.

However, since this is the first for the town to have a lady mayor, some residents expressed reservations about their expectations while most are optimistic about seeing more improvements in their community lives. Calasiao only had men as mayors since its founding.

“I am not sure how they will govern. For me, I expect change regardless of the gender,” Jacky Mae Perlado, a resident, said when asked about her expectations in the next three years from their new elected officials.

Meanwhile, Caramat also urged town officials and employees to end whatever disagreements they may have during the campaign period, and to cooperate for the town’s progress.  (Denisse Brillante, PUNCH intern)
