A green sea turtle, locally known as pawikan, was rescued after it found itself trapped inside a fishing net along the waters of Barangay Tori-Tori in Anda town on Monday, June 20.

Fisherman Mauricio Orlanda saw the turtle, 17 inches long, and 15 inches wide, trapped in his baklad or fish trap at around 5 in the morning and turned it over to Brando Viray, 53, a resident of Barangay Lucap in neighboring Alaminos City, who in turn notified called the police .

It was released to the sea by the Alaminos Police and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources after determining that it didn’t suffer any injury.

The green sea turtle, classified as endangered, is one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species, threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites”, the World Wildlife Fund said.
