A FARMER was killed while six others suffered third degree burns and were hospitalized when they were struck by a lightning in the afternoon of June 12 in Barangay Nibaliw, Mabini.

The fatality was identified as Marcelo Flores, 40, who was directly hit by the lightning as they took shelter in shanty under a mango tree following a heavy rainfall while they were planting rice in a rice paddy.

Those who suffered injuries in various parts of their bodies were Marvin Mendoza, 37; Richard Flores, 26; Eduardo Dizon Jr., 21; Edmond Dizon, 19, all of Barangay De Guzman, Mabini, and Sarah Jane Navarro, 26, and Archie Angas, 29, both of Palpalyasen, Burgos.

All of the victims were rushed to the Western Pangasinan District Hospital where Flores was declared dead on arrival. All the other farmers are now in stable condition after their treatment.

Investigation showed that Flores was standing while his companions were sitting under the tree when the lighting struck. (Leonardo Micua)
