THE Dagupan City Health Office (CHO) warned city residents against the disease leptospirosis which is prevalent nowadays owing to flash floods and flooding in low lying areas affected by high tide .

Dr. Dalvie Casilang, city health officer, said leptospirosis is a disease that often occurs particularly during the rainy season but it can be prevented by avoiding having to walk and wade through floodwaters.

But if people cannot avoid walking in floodwaters, she recommended that they wear rain boots to prevent their feet from being soaked in floodwaters infected with urine of rats, Casilang told newsmen in an interview last week.

He said the CHO is giving prophylaxis medicine for free for those who found themselves walking through floodwaters.

At the same time, Casilang reported that cases of gastro-enteritis are slowly rising and called on the residents to drink only safe drinking water.

He said sanitary inspectors have been fanned out to different barangays to conduct water testing to ensure the sources of drinking water of residents are safe.

He added that gastro enteritis occurs in communities where  people have no access to safe drinking water, if their safe source of drinking water is the artesian well located near a toilet. (Butch Uka)
