THE Dagupan City police is ready and fully prepared for the conduct of the national and local elections on May 9.

P/Lt. Colonel Abubakar Mangelen Jr., chief of police of the city, said the police station is “95 percent ready and leaves the five percent for contingencies.”

“So, while we are readying for the election, we are also preparing for any eventualities or contingencies that may take place during the Election Day,” Mangelen clarified in an interview.

He confirmed that an order from the national headquarters came to deploy two policemen for each voting center during the Election Day but had requested to be exempted from such directive and be allowed to adapt to situations since Dagupan has the highest voting population in Pangasinan.

He cited the city’s five island barangays namely Lomboy, Pugaro, Carael, Calmay and Salapingao, that could be difficult to reach on the day of elections and therefore, may require five policemen to each of these and three or more policemen in the other 26 other barangays, requiring a manpower of some 120 to 150.

He said the full preparations for the election will not affect the focused police operations, preventive patrols as well as deployment of its personnel in the city’s commercial areas to keep peace and order in the city.

He appealed to all the local candidates to watch and rein in their supporters’ activities that could lead to violence when they cross path in their respective sorties as he assured that there is no threat to peace in Dagupan as the day of the elections draws near, and the city remains quiet.

Meanwhile, the police continues to implement  “Oplan Bakal” in bars and establishments serving alcoholic beverage to their customers. (Butch Uka)
