BMs clash over comments on provincial polls
FIFTH District Board Member Noel Bince appealed to his colleagues in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) to let emotions to settle down first before making comments about the recently concluded elections so as not to exacerbate the still tense situation prevailing in the province.
Bince was reacting to the privilege speech of Second District Board Member Von Mark Mendoza on May 16 when he congratulated the newly proclaimed and duly elected governor of Pangasinan, Fifth District Congressman Ramon Guico III as well as reelected Vice Governor Mark Lambino.
Bince sharply reacted to Mendoza when the latter said “the people of Pangasinan will walk into a new tomorrow and noted that all the people cannot wait any longer for the new governor to assume his post,” adding “kampante ako na nasa tamang kamay na tayo”.
Bince, the most senior in the board, admitted he decided not to continue with his own privilege speech about his observation in the last election in order not to add fuel to the fire in the already emotional situation but when he heard Mendoza speak about the last election, he knew he had to react.
“Why not give two, three or four weeks bago tayo magsalita,” Bince intoned as he revealed reports he heard that the party of Governor Amado Espino III intends to file an election protest or a people’s initiative seeking a recount of all the votes.
He called on the SP to lead in healing the wounds and to keep calm, compulsion and peace, noting that the SP has already been divided in the just concluded election.
As a retort to the reaction of Bince, Mendoza said he was just stating a fact that there is already a proclaimed new governor and it is necessary for all to rally behind him.
But what is saddening, according to Mendoza, is the report that before Congressman Guico’s proclamation, there was already a report that the losing party intends to file an election protest.
“So, Mr, Presiding Officer, why can we not respect the will of the people?” Mendoza intoned.
He, however, agreed to the suggestion of Bince for SP to continuously reach out to the people and among them because of all of them have one intention—to make Pangasinan a premier province in the Philippines. (Leonardo Micua)
