VILLAR CLAN’S 70-YEARS LEGACY

THE fifth generation of Villar clan continues to hold sway in governing Sto. Tomas town after the election of another Villar as mayor in the recently concluded polls.

Councilor Dickerson Villar, 34-year-old mayor-elect, vows to sustain the 70 -years legacy of his ancestors who served the town as mayor, up to this day.

A licensed civil engineer and the son of incumbent mayor, Timoteo Villar III, recalled to The PUNCH that the Villar rule in this municipality started with Mayor Timoteo Soria Villar. He was later succeeded by his son, Antonio Villar Sr.

Antonio’s son and namesake, Antonio Villar Jr,  was the longest-serving mayor here in the 1970s and was succeeded by his wife, Vivien Villar for several terms. Antonio Jr returned as mayor after Vivien finished her term.

When Antonio Jr and Vivien retired from politics, their nephew, Timoteo Villar III, became the mayor, a position he holds to this day. His son Dickerson, who prepared for the mayoralty post as councilor will take over in July this year.

Meanwhile, Timoteo won as vice mayor, a situation that sits well with Dickerson because he can expect some guidance and on how best to keep the tradition set by the Villar brand of public service.

“I will try to equal the kind of public service they had given,” he said.

He added that the most challenging task is to be able to maintain the recognition this town is known for several decades as a drug-free or drug-unaffected town.

It was the late mayor Antonio “Bebot” Villar who started the no nonsense anti-drug campaign, something that remains unparalleled across the 44 towns and four cities in Pangasinan. Bebot was eventually appointed as the chair of the Dangerous Drugs Board.

For his first 100 days in office, Dickerson said he will focus on agriculture, education, peace and order.

He thanked his constituents for their continued trust and support to the family.

Aside from the election of Dickerson and Timoteo III as mayor and vice mayor respectively, seven of their councilors also won. (Eva Visperas)
