Paraynos, Perezes in another showdown in Urdaneta City
THE political clans of Urdaneta are facing another showdown to decide who will rule Urdaneta City in the next decade.
In their first political fight in 2019, the Paraynos prevailed over the Perezes.
Incumbent Mayor Julio “Rammy” Parayno III, then the city’s vice mayor, defeated Maria Teresa Socorro Perez-Naguiat, younger sister of then outgoing Mayor Amadeo “Bobom” Perez IV, who himself was routed by Parayno’s nephew Jimmy for the vice mayorship.
Today, the Perez siblings switched places in their bids to bring the Paraynos down. Bobom is challenging Mayor Parayno while Maria Teresa Socorro or Tet is eyeing to oust Jimmy from his seat as vice mayor.
The Paraynos are running under the Lakas CMD party while the Perezes are independent candidates.
The Perezes are children of former Firth District Rep. Congressman Amadeo Perez Jr., a multi-term mayor of the then municipality of Urdaneta. Their grandfather, Amadeo Perez, was an undefeated congressman in the old Fourth District.
Rammy is the son of former Vice Mayor Julio Parayno Sr. The elder Parayno was Jimmy’s grandfather.
In the 2019 election, the Paraynos were allied with then Binalonan Mayor Ramon Guico III in his quest for congress. Guico won in vote-rich Urdaneta City over then Rep. Amadeo Espino Jr. and with his victory in Urdaneta.
This time, although they filed under Lakas-CMD, where Guico belongs, the Paraynos were reported to have switched their support to Governor Amado Espino III after Mayor Rammy sensed that Guico was secretly supporting his Ilokano opponent Bobom Perez.
Espino and his teammate Nestor Reyes are running under the PDP Laban and Abante Pangasinan Ilocano Party. Their ally in Urdaneta and the whole fifth district of Pangasinan, is Nino Aroboleda, former three-term Provincial Board member and former vice mayor of Alcala town. (Leonardo Micua)
