Pangasinan’s TB cases, highest in region in 2021
PANGASINAN recorded 7,747 tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2021, highest in the Ilocos Region.
Dr. Rheuel Bobis of the Department of Health Ilocos Center for Health Development said 10,961 TB cases were recorded throughout the region last year.
Based on the data, 650 cases were in Ilocos Norte, 734 in Ilocos Sur, and 1,831 in La Union.
He said they are continuously conducting active cases finding through mobile X-ray.
Bobis said the management of TB patients include therapy (TB-DOTS) in hospitals and clinics accredited by the DOH for the treatment of TB. DOTS is free of charge for all TB patients.
He pointed out, that while the number of TB cases in the region has declined due to the pandemic, only a few were able to go to the hospitals for a medical checkup due to the restrictions imposed at the height of the pandemic.
The rate of successful treatment of TB patients in the region, or those who finished the six to 12-month therapy, has been high because the patients were monitored regularly to ensure that they take their medicines daily. (Jerick Pasiliao)
