NGCP prepares to secure facilities for May 9 polls
THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is set to operate its Overall Command Center (OCC) 24/7 for three days from May 8 to 10 to help secure power transmission operations and facilities during the May 9 national and local elections.
Ernest Vidal, chief of the publication department of NGCP in Northern Luzon, said the OCC is already activated with its personnel on duty from 8 a,m.-5 p.m., Monday to Sunday including holidays, monitoring grid disturbances.
From May 8 to 10, the Regional and Area Control Centers, critical substations, and the quick response team will be on 24-hour shifts, with the twice personnel on duty.
“Our Integrated Disaster Action Plan (IDAP) prescribes these and other measures to ensure the readiness of all power transmission facilities to be affected by emergencies during important national events. With its security and contingency preparations set, NGCP can ensure reliable transmission services before, during and after the election”, NGCP said.
Last February, NGCP’s Power Task Force Election (PTFE) already set out its preparation activities which includes coordination with the Commission on Elections and other government agencies on new directives on the activation of their respective contingency plans.
In coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, NGCP has been conducting clearing operations on overgrown vegetation along critical transmission lines across the country, especially for hard to reach areas and areas with security concerns.
Maintenance and construction work inside substations and within 300 meters of energized power lines will be suspended from May 2 to 16 while activities, which require power interruptions, will be suspended from April 24 to May 8, except in emergency cases. (Leonardo Micua)
