Delta variant still most dominant in Region 1

HEALTH authorities in the region maintain that the B.1.617.2 Covid-19 variant, otherwise known as ‘Delta’, that made its presence known in the second half of 2021, still remains the most dominant variant in the region, as of January 2022,.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Covid-19 focal person of the region’s Center for Health Development (CHD), cited the January 31, 2022 results released by the UP-Philippine Genome Center that confirmed that the Delta variant was detected in 389 (58.1%) of the total 669 tests.

Alpha, or the B.1.1.7 variant was second with 105 (15.7%), followed by the recent Omicron variant with 88 (13.2%), Beta or B.1.351, with 84 (12.6%), and the remaining P.3 variant with 3 individuals.

Meanwhile, of the 88 individuals that tested positive of the Omicron variant, Ilocos Norte and La Union logged 26 individuals each, followed by Pangasinan with 19 individuals, Ilocos Sur with 11, and Dagupan City with six.

Bobis said 73 of the individuals in the region tested by the UP-PGC with the Omicron variant were local residents, while the remaining 15 were Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROF). (Ahikam Pasion)
