By January 31, 2022Inside News

A TOP official of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development 1 warned the public against underestimating the Omicron variant’s reported mild symptoms.

Dr. Rheuel Bolbis, Medical Officer IV and COVID-19 focal person in Region 1, said there are clinical evidence that Omicron variant can lead to severe and critical diseases, especially to the elderly and to unvaccinated persons, and even death.

He said Omicron variant is seen to be responsible for sparking the rise of COVID-19 in Region 1 and in other regions in the Philippines today and it could further overwhelm health care system again.

He cited the total number of confirmed cases in Region 1 as of January 25 already ballooned to 107,860, only 92,490 recovered, with 13,032 active cases remaining and 2,338 deaths.

As of January 25, the number of active cases logged in the provinces were: La Union with 4,211, Pangasinan (3,717), Ilocos Norte (2,925), Ilocos Sur (1,567) and Dagupan City (612).

He said the numbers alone prove that infection by Omicron variant can impact heavily on the populace particularly on aging population, persons with co-morbidities and unvaccinated. (Leonardo Micua)
