Dad proposes financial aid to Odette-stricken areas

A MEMBER of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Dagupan proposed that the city government contributes financial assistance to affected families in the calamity stricken provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

The proposal was made by Councilor Dennis Canto during the first-ever face-to-face session of the SP since the start of the pandemic, stating that when Dagupan was struck by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on July 16, 1990, some of the LGUs in the Visayas and Mindanao sent their humanitarian aid to the city.

In the absence of a request from Mayor Brian Lim, Canto made the proposal in the presence of the city’s finance committee that was invited to respond to queries pertaining to the  distribution of the P6.2. Million Barangay Aid approved by the city council. So far, only eight barangays out of 31 barangays received their share.

A member of the finance committee said only available funds from city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund can be sourced for the proposal but only the city mayor can direct the provision for financial assistance.

Canto said Dagupan should reciprocate the generosity and kindness of the people of the Visayas and Mindanao by sending them assistance in their hours of need. (Leonardo Micua)
