DILG, not Comelec, will regulate premature campaign activities

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will only closely monitor the activities of candidates after they filed their certificates of candidacy starting October but it will not hold the candidates accountable for premature campaigning between now and October.

In a press conference organized by the Philippine Information Agency-Pangasinan last Wednesday, Comelec Elections Supervisor Marino Salas said Comelec does not have the mandate and powers to regulate activities of early campaigners whom he described as “epalitikos”.

He said the Comelec will have jurisdiction over campaign activities after the period of filing of certificates of candidacies from October 1-8, till then it is the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) that has the jurisdiction over these activities. (Jerick Pasiliao)
