Senate probe unveils Guo, Sual mayor link
RESUMPTION OF POGO QUIZ
MAYOR Lizeldo “Dong” Calugay of Sual town, denied allegations of business, political ties and even romantic ties between him and Alice Guo, the dismissed mayor of Bamban, Tarlac who is facing human trafficking and other cases arising from her alleged involvement in illegal online gaming operations.
In a Senate hearing on August 17, senators, including Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, presented evidence of several businesses linked to the two. Among these was Alisel Aquafarms allegedly registered under their names.
Photos were also presented showing them together at campaign events during the 2022 elections.
Calugay, who attended the probe for the first time after skipping two previous hearings for medical reasons, brushed off all the allegations saying he and Guo are merely friends.
Further inquiries by the Senate revealed that Calugay owns the Happy Penguin Resort in Barangay Poblacion, Sual, a venue frequented by Guo, according to Estrada.
A recent land title transfer of the resort raised further questions about the timeline of ownership amid ongoing investigations.
Senator Risa Hontiveros hinted at a potential child between Guo and Calugay, a claim that both denied during the hearing.
Hontiveros also introduced an informant who alleged a relationship between the two, although Calugay’s staff refuted these claims.
The hearing also uncovered procedural irregularities concerning Guo’s affidavit submitted to the Department of Justice, including questions regarding the notarization process and the involvement of various secretaries in the preparation of documents. (Ahikam Pasion)
