Senate hails Joe De V
FOR UNPARALLELED SERVICE TO FILIPINOS
THE Senate of the Philippines passed a resolution commending former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. for his illustrious political career and invaluable contribution to the country, and honored him with a fitting ceremony on August 28.
The resolution recognized the former congressman of the Fourth District of Pangasinan, also known as JDV, as the architect of the “Rainbow Coalition” in the House of Representatives, which helped unite the country during the turbulent post-martial law years unpaved the way for the smooth passage of more than 200 economic, political, and social reform laws during the administration of the late Fidel V. Ramos, a fellow Pangasinense.
It also took note that De Venecia, a prolific lawmaker, authored landmark economic laws such as the Build-Operate-Transfer Law, the U.S. Military Bases Conversion Law, and the law creating the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, among others.
Introduced by Senators Loren Legarda, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Sherwin Gatchalian, Joel Villanueva and Migz Zubiri, Senate Resolution No. 1142 noted that De Venecia served as Speaker of the House of Representatives for five terms from 1992 to 1998 and 2001 to 2008, “which is unprecedented in postwar Philippine Congress.”
De Venecia, husband of former Rep. Gina de Venecia and father of incumbent Rep. Christopher de Venecia, co-founded with Ramos and former Foreign Secretary Raul Manglapus the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, which became the ruling party in the Philippines for about 15 years, and served alternately as its Secretary-General, President, Chairman and Chairman Emiritus.
“ The Honorable JDV dedicated his life to public service, peace-building, promotion of international cooperation, inspiring leaders and future generations to pursue excellence in governance and democracy,” the resolution said. (Leonardo Micua)
