INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH

IN a speech during the 126th observance of Philippine Independence Day at the Dagupan City Plaza, on June 12, Mayor Belen Fernandez did not hold back her punches and minced no word against “enemies of the people within our ranks.”

Without naming names and the group, she said the city’s “enemies” continuously plotted to reject reforms that she initiated, “blocking every step of the way for the city to move forward.”

Fernandez said that today’s enemies of the Filipinos are no longer foreign powers but fellow Filipinos, and in case of Dagupan, fellow Dagupeños.

“We cannot fail our people who only want our city to move forward and ahead in all areas of community endeavor,” Fernandez intoned:

She cited the scholarship program of Dagupan for children of poor families was opposed by affluent but anti-poor people who wielded political power.

Fernandez said she had to fight for these children along with their families against those who obviously want Dagupenos to stay poor, whose hearts” are filled with hate  and bitterness,” and only want few opportunities for the city’s children and their families to prosper.

She said these “enemies”  do not want Dagupan to be freed from recurrent widespread flood, for Dagupan not to be prepared for any calamity.

She denounced their agenda preventing the establishment of a Mother and Child Hospital, the construction of school building and repair of dilapidated one, the purchase of needed truck and equipment for more efficient garbage collection and management, and others.

“We will not let them succeed in frustrating the dreams of our youth and of every Dagupan family who are hoping to be freed from the chain of poverty that had bound them for long,” she said.

Fernandez went further. “We will not allow kotong by any public servant, ghost deliveries of equipment and supplies like those done by the previous city administration,” she intoned.

In parting, Fernandez called on every one to cherish and protect  “the freedom that we all enjoy today”.

“We are all given a choice each day. We can choose to live abundantly, to transform the negative into meaningful things when we come to work together,” Fernandez said. (Leonardo Micua)
