Fireworks-related injuries in Pangasinan 33% higher

FIREWORKS-related injuries (FWRI) in Pangasinan recorded from Dec. 21, 2023 to Jan. 2, 2024 are 33% higher than last year’s data covering the same period.

According to the Provincial Health Office, there were 93 cases in 2023 compared to 70 in 2022 and the data was culled from 14 Pangasinan government hospitals, Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), private hospitals and health centers.

A four-year-old female was the youngest victim while the oldest was a 76-year-old male.

Kwitis comprised 43 percent of injuries of most fireworks used, followed by fountain and boga with eight cases each, five for 5- star.  The lighting of whistle bomb caused four injuries, yakult, 2; and one each for pla pla, piccolo, luces, skyrocket, and one star.

Sixteen were injured by various types of firecrackers stored in an unfinished construction of a house in Dagupan City, and two were victims of stray bullets.

The PHO data also showed 63 cases were actively involved, while 30 cases were bystanders.

Forty-five cases of the victims had their hands injured. Other cases of blast burns were on the faces, heads, necks while 19 cases had burns on the knees, legs and thighs. Ten had burns in their forearm, arm, 6; one each on feet, chest and back area.

Ten suffered eye injuries.

Dagupan City had 22 cases, Urdaneta City had 9, San Carlos City had 6, while Bugallon, Lingayen, Calasiao, Malasiqui, Pozorrubio had 4 each.

Areas with zero FWRI this year were Bani, Burgos, Dasol, Infanta, Mabini, Sual, Aguilar, Urbiztondo, Alcala, Basista, Bautista, Sto. Tomas, Laoac, Villasis, Balungao, Natividad, San Quintin and Tayug.

Twenty cases were rushed to R1MC, 11 victims to Pangasinan Provincial Hospital, Dagupan City Health Office and Lingayen District Hospital attended to eight victims each, Urdaneta District Hospital and Mapandan Community Hospital had six victims each treated.

Most of the victims are aged 10 to 14 years old, 73 were male while 20 were female. (Eva Visperas)
