WITH only 56 remaining active COVID-19 cases as of February 24, considered a significant drop from the 127 active cases logged a week ago on February 17, Pangasinan appears to be ready for more relaxed restrictions under Alert Level 1.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) said the latest data showed there were only 90 new confirmed cases logged for the week ending February 24 that saw 159 patients that recovered, and only two deaths.

And the Provincial Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (PESU) reported that the registered seven-day daily average cases from February 18 to 24 was 12, from the 28 averaged cases for the period February 11 to 17.

Its data showed that 18 of the 48 towns and cities of Pangasinan, were COVID-free: Agno, Alaminos, Asingan, Bani, Basista, Bayambang, Dasol, Infanta, Labrador,  Mangatarem, San Jacinto, San Manuel, San Quintin, Sison, Sual, Tayug, Urbiztondo and Villasis.

So far, Malasiqui had logged the highest number of cases in the province at 6, followed by Aguilar, Bugallon, Pozorrubio, Rosales, and Urdaneta City (3 cases each), Burgos, Calasiao, Lingayen Mabini, Mangaldan, Sta. Maria and Umingan (2 each).

However, the status in Dagupan City was unclear since the provincial tally showed it only had five active cases as of February 24 but in the February 23 post of Dagupan’s Public Information Office, the city had 23 remaining cases.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, said 82% of the 2,460,000 eligible population in Pangasinan have been fully vaccinated which explains why the province’s average daily attack rate has gone down to 1, signifying a low rate.

De Guzman said 2,032,056 individuals in Pangasinan were already fully vaccinated (including Dagupan’s vaxxed individuals).

She added that 90% of the 66 active cases in the province were on home isolation, and were only experiencing mild cases or were asymptomatic.

The remaining ten percent were experiencing moderate symptoms. “Sila yung mga hindi pa nabakunahan”, said de Guzman.

Despite the rising vaccination rollout result, however, De Guzman still frets over unvaccinated individuals in the province. According to the PHO, there are still around 100,000 individuals unvaccinated.

“Sinusuyod na po naming yung mga barangay sa Pangasinan para hanapin ang mga tao na ito”, said de Guzman.

De Guzman also fears that people may get too complacent due to declining cases, which could result in denying themselves their booster shot.

The data of Ilocos Center for Health Development data, Pangasinan, including Dagupan City, logged only around 200,000 individuals that received the booster shots.

Nonetheless, De Guzman said she’s grateful to parents who brought their 5 to 11 year-old children to be vaccinated. There were 3,000 kids that received their vaccines last week. (Leonardo Micua)
