CONTAGION IN PANGASINAN

THE fresh surge of COVID-19 cases in Pangasinan after the holiday season was kept at bay by the high number of recovered infected patients as gleaned from the records shared by the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) of the Provincial Health Office from January 14 to 27.

The data showed there were 2,106 new cases that were logged but this was overshadowed by the higher 2,371 recoveries recorded, pulling down the number of active cases confined in hospitals, isolation units and on home quarantine to 1,874 from 2,163 last January 20.

Officials are optimistic that the cases are now on a downtrend after COVID -19 reached its peak last January 22 when there were 488 new cases that were recorded, the highest number of cases on a single day ever recorded since the start of the year.

Records showed that cases dipped to 310 on January 23, then 260 on January 24 and 207 on January 25. It was both 281 on January 26 and 27. Before this, there were 279 cases that were logged on January 21.

Overall, the seven-day daily average of new cases recorded by PESU from January 21 to 27 was 300, but just two cases lower than the seven-day daily average of 302 from January 14 to 20.

However, there were 23 patients that died for the period.

The new cases brought the grand total of COVID-19 cases in Pangasinan to a new high of 41,036. Of the number, 37,881 had recovered and 1,281 had died.

Pangasinan will remain under Alert Level 3 classification until January 31 along with La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte and Dagupan City.

As of January 27, there were 46 towns and cities infected by the pandemic. Only Alaminos City and Dasol were not infected,

Dagupan, an independent component city of Pangasinan, recorded 603 active cases as of January 25, sill the epicenter of the pandemic in the province.

Lingayen leads the component towns and cities placed under the watchlist of the PHO with 113 cases, followed by Urdaneta City (108), Calasiao (105), Malasiqui (92), Bugallon and Sta. Barbara (85 each), Mangaldan (78), Mangatarem (76), Binmaley (75), Manaoag (71) and Sison (70). (Leonardo Micua)
