MANY RECKLESS DRIVERS?

THERE were more vehicular road incidents in Pangasinan than in any other province in the region.

This data was confirmed by the Police Regional Office I (PRO1) and attributed the high incidence mostly to reckless driving as the leading cause.

P/LtCol Benigno Sumawang, PRO1 Public Information Office chief, said PRO1 decided to release the data in observance of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims last November 19.

In Region 1, there were 2,586 cases of road accidents from January 1 to November 16 this year and Pangasinan recorded the most with 1,494 road crash incidents, followed by La Union with 623, Ilocos Sur with 326, and Ilocos Norte with 143.

According to the PRO1 Crime Incident Reporting and Analysis System (CIRAS), reckless driving logged 912 cases, followed by miscalculation, over-speeding, and encroachment.

Sumawang added that CIRAS recorded 334 deaths due to road crash incidents and 1,733 injured.

He also urged all chiefs of police in the region to strictly ban drying of palay on highways because it contributed to dramatic rise in road accidents. (Ahikam Pasion)
